God promised no more floods, so global warming doesn't exist?

The video of his speech is 2:26, and it’s safe for viewing at work.

Essentially, during the March 25th meeting of the House Subcommittee on Energy and Environment, Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL) stated that Earth cannot be destroyed as a result of global warming, since God promised in Genesis that there would never again be a global flood. Thus, he implies, global warming is not a threat.

"Shimkus also called Chris Monckton (a past advocate of forcibly quarantining people with AIDS for life) to testify as a climate expert."

It suddenly struck me that it’s people like these that are representing us as a country, and base their decisions pertaining to climate change reform solely on the Old Testament.

The ramifications of this hit me, as well. If a single House Representative can say things like this, how do we know what other environmental decisions made by our federal government have only had Biblical support?

Bush’s refusal to sign the Kyoto Protocol is one relatively recent example. All the scientific evidence available points to the definitive existence and perpetuation of global warming, yet Bush still refused to sign a document promising to reduce emissions by a tiny percentage per year over the next few years. All other developed nations signed it without batting an eyebrow.

If this is indeed a trend, our country’s obvious lack of participation to reduce carbon emissions are based entirely on Biblical beliefs, without any scientific merit.

Is this America? Is this what our secular, religiously-neutral, Constitution-abiding country has become?

How would our forefathers react if they knew our government officials were using the Bible to dictate the choices that literally shape our entire world? Maybe one of them can tell us.

"Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity."

-Thomas Jefferson, Notes on Virginia, 1782

Meet the New World Climate Leader – The United States?

With US carbon emissions down 7% in four years and bigger drops expected, the United States may emerge as a global leader in cutting carbon and stabilizing the climate. Lester Brown, President of the Earth Policy Institute, tells Earth Focus that new forces including life style and demographic changes are reducing the use of both coal and oil in the United States. He expects that carbon emissions could decline by as much as 20% in the United States by 2020.

FSRN US Threatens Retaliation Over EU Carbon Laws on Aviation

Europe has the world’s most-ambitious cap and trade system for cutting greenhouse gas emissions. For six years now, thousands of factories and power plants have had to reduce their emissions — or pay for their excess carbon pollution. Starting January 1, airlines and air cargo companies must join the program, including foreign carriers that land at European airports. But countries – including the US – who have airlines flying into Europe are resisting the program. The issue is shaping up to become an international showdown over what it means to get serious about global warming. From France, FSRN’s Liam Moriarty reports. More at fsrn.org

The Carbon Lottery Draw: 30 August 2011

Welcome to The Carbon Lottery Draw held on the 30 August 2011. The Carbon Lottery is the first “green lottery” of its kind in the world where your £2 ticket buys you 100 kilograms for a carbon offset and a chance to win €4000000! By purchasing a ticket you are helping us reduce the impact we have on the planet and are helping us tackle the effects of climate change, one ticket at a time. Our Story: Climate change is a fact. One of the most effective ways other than changing your consumption habits is by offsetting. But why are so few people doing this? We’ve been in the business of reducing emissions for quite some time and we wanted to find a way of rewarding you to help us reduce carbon emissions and we think that a lottery is both a fun and effective way of offsetting your carbon footprint. How your ticket makes a difference: We understand how difficult it can be to change your carbon emitting habits, so for the activities you can’t change you should be using The Carbon Lottery to offset your remaining carbon footprint. By purchasing a £2 Carbon Lottery ticket a carbon offset is purchased to the equivalent of a 200 mile trip, and stand a chance to win millions of Euros and mega jackpot prizes! Your ticket money goes towards our Carbon Offset projects which are approved and verified according to the highest level (Gold Standard and VCS) and the rest goes towards your prize and administrative and marketing expenses. The more you play the more you are doing your bit to

Geoengineering Carbon

Correspondent Josh Zepps tells us about innovations for cleaning up the carbon dioxide that’s already in the atmosphere. Scientists at Columbia University have developed a kind of “artificial leaf” that can remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere faster than actual trees. It can be re-purposed, for carbonated drinks, dry ice, even a replacement for gasoline. Zepps interviews Ken Caldeira, an atmospheric scientist with the Carnegie Institution at Stanford University, who says it will tace decades to clean up the excess carbon dioxide that’s heating up the atmosphere. But Allen Wright and Klaus Lackner of the Earth Institute’s Lenfest Center for Sustainable Energy at Columbia University may have an answer: A type of plastic “leaf” that soaks up carbon dioxide from the air — about one ton a day for a piece the size of a large tree. To release the CO2, they the wet the plastic and catch the bubbles. Allen says the carbon dioxide can be used to create a synthetic gasoline that’s carbon neutral because its emissions can be soaked up again. The big challenge to deploying these synthetic trees isn’t technological, but financial. The researchers say the technology has to be profitable, and for that, they need to be able to sell the carbon dioxide to industry at a competitive price. But they also believe synthetic trees would get a bigger boost if the government taxed carbon dioxide emissions.

“Trash to Gas” Recycling Trucks

Waste Management just launched their 1000th truck to be run off of liquefied natural gas, a bi-product from trash in found in landfills. This closed loop system promotes a healthier environment because the harvested gas used as fuel is clean burning, reducing carbon emissions and greenhouse gases as well as reducing petroleum dependency as much as 8 million gallons a year!
