FSRN US Threatens Retaliation Over EU Carbon Laws on Aviation
Europe has the world’s most-ambitious cap and trade system for cutting greenhouse gas emissions. For six years now, thousands of factories and power plants have had to reduce their emissions — or pay for their excess carbon pollution. Starting January 1, airlines and air cargo companies must join the program, including foreign carriers that land at European airports. But countries – including the US – who have airlines flying into Europe are resisting the program. The issue is shaping up to become an international showdown over what it means to get serious about global warming. From France, FSRN’s Liam Moriarty reports. More at fsrn.org

That’s when new EU rules will oblige all them to pay for their carbon emissions, every time they land or take off in Europe. American Airlines and United Continental lodged a legal challenge against the new EU regulation, urging it falls outside international law – But the European Court of Justice has ruled against the two US carriers Bill Hemmings, program manager of EU Transport And Environment Dep., said, “Where does that leave the airlines? Well, if they want to continue to fly into Europe they have to abide by the conditions of the emissions trading system.” But it’s not just American carriers that are unhappy. India, Russia and China also also argue the move has been imposed without their consent Cathy Buyck, senior editor of Air Transport World Magazine, said, “I think they have all rights to be very upset about it. It is indeed unilateral action by the European Union. Within the aviation world …
