A Hitchhiker’s Guide To Gaia – Preparing For Climate Change

When it comes to climate change, global warming and the state of the planet Earth, there are many contradictory voices. Many of these voices are affected by motive , others by guilt, whilst the majority are just plain wrong!

There is one scientist whose voice resonates above all the others, a scientist, who at 91 years old, has seldom got it wrong, a scientist who we should all take very seriously. His name is professor James Lovelock.

In a village pub in the 1960′s, the distinguished author, William Golding, convinced Lovelock to name his hypothesis (that the Earth is a highly complex self-regulating system), Gaia, the Greek Goddess representing the Earth. For many years Lovelock observed Gaia from many angles: from space, beneath the oceans, amidst glaciers, as well as in the all important atmosphere. His conclusions about Gaia are now widely accepted throughout the scientific community. His Gaia hypothesis expounds that we are all part of the Earth System, all part of the intricate and living Earth. As such, we all have a role to play, from the algae on the rocks to the clouds in the sky, to the urine we release with certain relief! Gaia as a whole can be thought of as a living super-organism, with our own species identifiable as the most highly developed intelligent species Gaia has ever produced. It is our success as a species and what it has taken to achieve it that could also be the catalyst that leads to one of the greatest tragedy’s that mankind has yet encountered.

The key message is that we don’t have much time and failure to act is not an option we have. “Saving the planet” and the “Green Revolution” are romantic delusions that will speed us faster towards a perilous end. It must be understood that the planet will save herself, if we wish to survive with her, we must take preparatory action.

‘A Hitchhiker’s Guide To Gaia’ is a collaboration with Professor James Lovelock that will investigate his, and others, observations and predictions surrounding Gaia Theory. Human survival is based around the preservation of civilisation with abundant food, water and energy supplies. Lovelock has a poignant message with practical advice for preparing for the future that will soon be upon us.

Reducing livestock emissions

We’re working with farmers, industry and other researchers, to explore how we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions in livestock industries while increasing productivity. Almost 70% of the Australian agriculture sector’s emissions come from livestock (including cattle, sheep, goats and pigs). This video shows how our researchers are studying cattle methane emissions to help farmers and land managers understand how they can reduce them. Using dietary and gut microbe improvements, high-tech measurement technology and different stock management methods, scientists hope to establish cheap and simple methods to reduce livestock methane emissions and improve productivity. This research is part of our effort to help Australia reduce the causes of climate change and adapt to future climate conditions. It was funded by CSIRO, the Australian Government Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry and Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA). Footage for this video was contributed by MLA and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). More information: www.csiro.au www.csiro.au

God promised no more floods, so global warming doesn't exist?

The video of his speech is 2:26, and it’s safe for viewing at work.

Essentially, during the March 25th meeting of the House Subcommittee on Energy and Environment, Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL) stated that Earth cannot be destroyed as a result of global warming, since God promised in Genesis that there would never again be a global flood. Thus, he implies, global warming is not a threat.

"Shimkus also called Chris Monckton (a past advocate of forcibly quarantining people with AIDS for life) to testify as a climate expert."

It suddenly struck me that it’s people like these that are representing us as a country, and base their decisions pertaining to climate change reform solely on the Old Testament.

O_Ó

The ramifications of this hit me, as well. If a single House Representative can say things like this, how do we know what other environmental decisions made by our federal government have only had Biblical support?

Bush’s refusal to sign the Kyoto Protocol is one relatively recent example. All the scientific evidence available points to the definitive existence and perpetuation of global warming, yet Bush still refused to sign a document promising to reduce emissions by a tiny percentage per year over the next few years. All other developed nations signed it without batting an eyebrow.

If this is indeed a trend, our country’s obvious lack of participation to reduce carbon emissions are based entirely on Biblical beliefs, without any scientific merit.

Is this America? Is this what our secular, religiously-neutral, Constitution-abiding country has become?

How would our forefathers react if they knew our government officials were using the Bible to dictate the choices that literally shape our entire world? Maybe one of them can tell us.

"Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity."

-Thomas Jefferson, Notes on Virginia, 1782

CO2 has Friends 2011

This geological perspective looks at the impact of volcanic cycles and man’s activities on global dimming, global cooling and global warming. Importance of nanoparticles, the “Soot Period” and other greenhouse gases, not just CO2.

Chinese airline refuses to accept EU carbon emission law

European Commission spokesman AIsaac Valero-Ladron on Thursday said that airlines flying in European airspace have to comply with EU law despite objections expressed by China on charging airlines for carbon emissions. On 1 January, the EU brought airlines under its Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), which aims at curbing emissions of climate-changing gases. Today, Chai Haibo of the China Air Transport Association said that its members would not cooperate with the ETS. AIsaac Valero-Ladron stated that ‘If the Chinese want to do business in Europe, like open a restaurant or something, they have to comply with the health and the safety requirement. This is not that different. This is just that if you want to operate in Europe, you have to respect the law.’ Airlines which do not comply with the new EU tax can be fined.

Anima Mundi

Anima Mundi is a new documentary on Permaculture, the Gaia theory, Peak Oil survival and Climate Change (man-made or not) featuring David Holmgren (cooriginator of Permaculture), John Seed (Deep Ecology), Dr Stephan Harding (Gaia Science and author of Animate Earth), Dr Vandana Shiva (Human Rights – Environment – Philosophy), Michael C Ruppert (from the movie Collapse), Michael Reynolds (from the film The Garbage Warrior), Dr Christine James (Psychology), Dr Mark O’Meadhra (Integrative Medicine), Noam Chomsky and Permablitz.

FSRN US Threatens Retaliation Over EU Carbon Laws on Aviation

Europe has the world’s most-ambitious cap and trade system for cutting greenhouse gas emissions. For six years now, thousands of factories and power plants have had to reduce their emissions — or pay for their excess carbon pollution. Starting January 1, airlines and air cargo companies must join the program, including foreign carriers that land at European airports. But countries – including the US – who have airlines flying into Europe are resisting the program. The issue is shaping up to become an international showdown over what it means to get serious about global warming. From France, FSRN’s Liam Moriarty reports. More at fsrn.org
