European Commission spokesman AIsaac Valero-Ladron on Thursday said that airlines flying in European airspace have to comply with EU law despite objections expressed by China on charging airlines for carbon emissions. On 1 January, the EU brought airlines under its Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), which aims at curbing emissions of climate-changing gases. Today, Chai Haibo of the China Air Transport Association said that its members would not cooperate with the ETS. AIsaac Valero-Ladron stated that ‘If the Chinese want to do business in Europe, like open a restaurant or something, they have to comply with the health and the safety requirement. This is not that different. This is just that if you want to operate in Europe, you have to respect the law.’ Airlines which do not comply with the new EU tax can be fined.

Way back in 1896, Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius, using relatively primitive techniques, understood CO2 better than most people alive today; especially those who ignore any facts or methods that counter their ideology. CO2′s atmospheric effects are nothing new to science, and the evidence was solidified by the 1950s (see Plass and Revelle). Again, this was decades before preventative action seemed urgent, thus denial was not a factor. Today’s oil-shills and laymen pushing free market ideology are not qualified to speak on par with honest scientists, yet they dumb-down the evidence and insist the debate is rigged against them. They use the same disinformation tactics as Creationists, and for many of the same reasons. Considering the total volume of evidence today, global warming deniers can best be described as pathological liars. They are major hypocrites for accepting all the benefits of science while ignoring the warnings it brings.
